One note: the criticisms of artifacts came mostly towards the beginning of the expansion; the investment required by the artifacts made it difficult to prepare multiple specs for the first raid tier, much less multipull toons. As time progressed and catch-up mechanics multiplied, this was mostly forgotten. By making sure that the primary dps azurite traits were the first to be unlocked, BFA had only one extra bar to competitive readiness for the first raid tier, the Champions of Azeroth rep, outside of the normal gear grind.
Somewhat an aside: finding at level azerite gear after raid opened became pretty terrible: two chests from raid bosses, two heads from raid bosses, one shoulder, and a random chance at any slot, with the possibility of being a azurite piece once a week, with the faint hope of an impossibly large titanforge from earlier content.
