Formed upon a social structure of loyalty and vassalage, over time, the most precious woods were given to subjects close to the ruler. As a result, houses were classed according to their materials.

The raree the wood, the higher the standing of the house.

As a matter of maintaining relationships between houses, vassals of a lord would received a certain number of trees or planks of wood for each year of service. Thus, to have a home formed of many types of wood was considered a disgrace and sign of a family’s disloyalty.

It came to be associated with a mercenary way of life.
